FAIR Facilities and Instruments Workshop #2 Report: Recent Progress, Remaining Challenges, and Emerging PID Strategies
This project is a collaboration funded by the NSF's FAIR Open Science program, focused on establishing best practices for persistent identifiers (PIDs) for research facilities and instrumentation. The second in-person workshop was held at Florida State University in August 2024, continuing discussions from the first workshop. Key needs identified include: - Practical recommendations for facility/instrument operators on assigning PIDs - Clear value propositions for facility/instrument users to adopt PIDs - Recommendations for a national PID strategy - More robust infrastructure and services for facility/instrument PIDs - Balancing general vs. specific PID guidance - Engaging with instrument manufacturers and publishers Next steps include developing a national PID strategy for facilities/instruments, and empowering local contributors to drive adoption.
